Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court on Friday ordered former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa not to leave the country as his brother and former President Gotabaya did last Tuesday following last weekend’s popular uprising against the Sri Lankan government over the devastating economic crisis plaguing the nation.

The order, announced by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and reported by News First, will be in force until July 28.

Part of the criticism of the population was directed against the nepotism exhibited by the Rajapaksa clan, one of the great historical dominators of the country’s politics.

President Rajapaksa was forced to force the resignation of his brother Mahinda as Prime Minister in May, during another of the high points of the crisis.

Although it has not been confirmed by the authorities, the British broadcaster BBC and the Sri Lankan national newspaper ‘Daily Mirror’ reported last Thursday that Basil Rajapaksa had finally managed to leave the country after a first frustrated attempt following the uprising.
