At least two people died Wednesday after a mountain collapsed in Medellin, in northwestern Colombia, local authorities said.
After an initial check of the area following the event, the deaths of a 30-year-old woman and a two-year-old child have been determined, as detailed by the mayor of Medellin, Daniel Quintero, on his Twitter account.
“I regret to inform the loss of life of a 30 year old woman and that of a two year old minor in the mass movement presented in the corregimiento of San Antonio de Prado. We continue to advance in the search and rescue tasks,” said Quintero.
In this sense, emergency teams have begun to fly over the area in search of more people. The Police and the Colombian Army have activated phase two of emergency response.
The landslide would have generated a blockage in the Quebrada Doña María riverbed, on the outskirts of Medellín and near the municipality of Itagüí. In addition, other landslides have not been ruled out, which is why authorities have urged citizens to evacuate the lands adjacent to the landslide, as reported by ‘El Espectador’.
Videos published in social networks show how part of the hillside is collapsing, while inhabitants of the area scream in fear of the advance of the landslide. Some inhabitants have denounced that they have been warning for months that the rains could cause situations like this, and have blamed the authorities for not preventing it.
